Hearing Screening

A quick and easy test to understand if more thorough (diagnostic) testing is needed to identify hearing loss. All newborns receive hearing screening at birth. After birth, young children should receive periodic hearing screening to monitor their hearing as they grow. Hearing screening after birth is often conducted in an outpatient setting such as in a doctor’s office, an audiology facility, or an educational setting.

Diagnostic Hearing Test

A diagnostic hearing test may be also called a “full hearing test” or an “audiology evaluation”. The evaluation consists of a series of tests conducted by a pediatric audiologist to determine if a hearing loss exists, including the type and degree of hearing loss. The type of testing used depends on the age of the child.

Sedated Diagnostic Hearing Test

One of the diagnostic tests used to determine hearing loss in babies and very young children is the ABR (Auditory Brainstem Response) test. During ABR testing the child must be asleep. In ideal conditions, the test is completed while the child sleeps naturally. If the child is unable to sleep on their own sedation may be required.

Hearing Aid Services

Services that may include a hearing aid evaluation, conducted by a pediatric audiologist, to determine the type of hearing aid that will best fit the child’s needs. Other services include hearing aid checks to ensure the hearing aids are working properly and that the fit continues to meet the child’s hearing needs over time.

Earmolds

A custom-made earpiece that attaches to a Behind-the Ear hearing aid and is designed to fit perfectly in a child’s ear. As infants and young children grow quickly, earmolds may need to be re-made often to ensure a secure fit and to make sure the hearing aids are working at their best. Pediatric audiology facilities that fit hearing aids also make custom earmolds.

Cochlear Implant Services

Services provided by a team of experts that are necessary for successful cochlear implantation. Services may include evaluation, counseling, surgery and post-implant rehabilitation.
